Welcome to ATCG123

THE IB ROADMAP

All units from A1.1 (Water) through D4.3 (Climate Change). IB’s roadmap is designed to progress through the content according to 4 themes: Unity and Diversity (theme A), Form and Function (theme B), Interaction and Interdependence (theme C), and Continuity and Change (theme D).

THE RISS ROADMAP

This is the alternate roadmap we follow at RISS (adapted from BioNinja). This organizes the syllabus according to biology topic – we start with cells and move our way up to more complex living systems, concluding Grade 12 with ecosystems and human impacts.

PACING CALENDER

The calendar we do our best to adhere to throughout the two-year DP program. This is based on the RISS science schedule format:  we have 4 SL periods per week, +1 AHL period per week (we often adapt this to 3 SL periods + 2 HL periods).

How to use the unit plans

A quick walkthrough on how to use the unit plans and how the class works.

Example Unit Plan + Slides

Sample Unit Plan for Topic A2.1: Origins of Cells

This is a sample unit plan for A2.1 that will be shared with students as we approach it via the pacing calendar. Each unit plan includes detailed key objectives + teaching slides for each sub-topic within the syllabus, along with an extensive list of activities for students.

Sample Teaching Slides for Topic A2.1: Origins of Cells

This is an example of the teaching slides that students can use to learn the content for the week. I teach students to navigate these slides on their own, but also use them to support my teaching in class.

About

ATCG123 was created to support both DP Biology teachers and students as they navigate the rigorous and challenging curriculum.

The site is a compilation of valuable resources, drawing from well-known sources like BioNinja, biologyforlife, and the notes templates from IB Biosone. While the site was originally designed for students, I hope these resources prove useful to fellow IB Bio educators.

I’m Scott Phillips and have been teaching at IB schools for 9 years, the last several at Rotterdam International Secondary School.

Feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, concerns – happy studying!
